Haj Committee in India has decided to do away with VIP quota for government officials while reviewing the policy.
According to Arab News, about 150,000 people from India, a country with a Muslim population of 200 million, go to Saudi Arabia every year to perform Hajj, while the majority wait for their turn for several years.
In India, under the Hajj Policy, 500 seats are allotted to senior government officials every year, which is being reviewed by the committee.
Manuri Begum, vice-chairperson of the Hajj Committee, told Arab News that a decision has been taken to end the VIP quota recently, but it has not been implemented yet, and there is no consensus on the matter at present.
Manuri Begum and Chairman of the Committee AP Abdullah Kutty say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's general opinion is that no one should be given special privileges due to his high social status. It has been decided to terminate.
Committee Chairman Abdullah Katti further said that "VIP culture is not good especially when millions of people are sitting waiting to perform Hajj". Prime Minister Modi is in favor of ending the VIP culture.
He said that after a detailed discussion with all concerned, a new policy has been prepared which will be announced in the next few days.
Asad Rizvi, an analyst from Lucknow, expressed his views and said, "When you go for Hajj, everyone's status is equal there, people wear the same clothes, and each duty of Hajj is performed by a person." It goes through the same process.
Zaid Khan, a resident of Meerut city, says that a large number of people want to perform Hajj, but their number does not come.
He expressed hope that the amendment of the policy will give more people the opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia and perform Hajj.
