Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is currently in power with its allied parties and PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif is staying in the UK for treatment.
Elections are far away, so in this situation, the party has practically given the reins of the party to Maryam Nawaz. She is currently the senior vice president and chief organizer of the party. Maryam Nawaz is expected to return home in the last week of January.
Before her return, however, there is some kind of rift brewing within the PML-N, from which the impression is emerging that some leaders may not like Maryam Nawaz becoming so powerful. The party itself realized that Maryam Nawaz's hold on the party was strong when Chaudhry Nisar, the main leader of the party at that time, who was considered to be Nawaz Sharif's right hand, openly refused to accept Maryam Nawaz's leadership.
While he was the interior minister, he had made a statement that 'the party has come to a dead end due to the radical statements of Maryam Nawaz.' There is a daughter. In other words, they never recognized Maryam Nawaz as their leader.
In the recent past, when there was a bad time for PML-N and almost all the leadership was in jails, there were two narratives and two groups within the party. Shahbaz Sharif on one side and Nawaz Sharif on the other. Ishaq Dar, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Javed Latif and Talal Chaudhry were prominent among those who spoke openly in favor of Nawaz Sharif during the days of Atab.
Most of the other leaders felt comfortable in silence. All such party leaders are considered supporters of Shehbaz Sharif's 'school of thought'. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, however, remained on both sides. On one hand, he even reached the position of Nawaz Sharif's confidant and prime minister. On the other hand, with Miftah Ismail, his economic theory was far from Ishaq Dar and close to Shahbaz Sharif.
Now, after Maryam Nawaz has been entrusted with power within the party, new alignments are being seen in PML-N. Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had made a statement in 2021 that Maryam is not PML-N's prime ministerial candidate, on which many voices were raised even within the party.
Recently, in a TV show, when the host asked him whether Maryam Nawaz's return would benefit the party? So, instead of giving a direct answer, he said that 'Nawaz Sharif's coming will surely be beneficial.' Similarly, Miftah Ismail also gave a TV talk show to Maryam Nawaz's husband Captain (R) Safdar of PML-N. Laughingly avoided the question of being made head of the youth organization.
Apart from all these things, when Maryam Nawaz was made the chief organizer of the party, not much enthusiasm was expressed by the already available leadership. He is currently the Interior Minister and is considered very close to Nawaz Sharif and Maryam.
The party leadership is not talking openly about what are the real reservations of the leaders regarding the leadership of Maryam Nawaz within the party.
Uzmi Bukhari, spokesperson of PML-N in Punjab, says that the party is united and speculations should be avoided, Maryam Sahiba will be warmly welcomed in Lahore on her return. A meeting was also held in this regard in Lahore and responsibilities have been assigned to people.
Party leader Mian Latif says that this party belongs to Mian Nawaz Sharif and whatever he wants will happen. So it doesn't matter whether someone likes it or not. When Maryam Sahiba was made senior vice president, the party was consulted, but no one spoke at that time.
Political analysts say that Maryam Nawaz fought her father's case in public and held large rallies during her father's imprisonment. If the party needs a face, then she is Maryam after Nawaz Sharif.
Analyst Sohail Waraich says, 'It is true that the speed at which Maryam Nawaz has made a place in the party has no precedent within the PML-N. I do not think that there is going to be a big split within the party. When Nawaz Sharif returns, many problems of this party will be solved in the same way.
