Local body elections in Islamabad, Election Commission challenged the decision

The Election Commission and the federal government have filed intra-court appeals against the decision of the High Court to hold local body elections in Islamabad on December 31.

In an appeal filed in the Islamabad High Court on Saturday, the Election Commission has challenged the court's decision saying that it is not possible to make arrangements for the elections on one day's notice.

It has been requested from the Islamabad High Court that the hearing of the intra-court appeal should be conducted today and the order to hold the local body elections should be annulled.

The Islamabad High Court in its decision on Friday evening had directed the Election Commission to hold local body elections in the federal capital on December 31 (today).

After the court decision in Islamabad, on Saturday morning, citizens left their homes to vote in local elections in various union councils, but there was no election staff at the polling station.

Video footage released by Tehreek-e-Insaf showed citizens queuing up to vote in some areas.

Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan has said in a statement that "Today, by not following the order of the Islamabad High Court regarding the holding of local body elections in Islamabad, the Election Commission has again proved that it is the import of the government and its patrons." There is a B team.'

Imran Khan said that PDM is running away from every election field because of fear of people. The right to vote is a basic democratic principle and PTI stands by it wholeheartedly.

On the other hand, PML-N leader Tariq Fazal Chaudhary while talking to the media said that he respects the court decision but the federal government has the power to legislate.

On Friday evening, High Court Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, while delivering the verdict, directed the Election Commission to conduct the elections immediately.

Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Jamaat-e-Islami challenged the decision of the Election Commission to postpone the local body elections in Islamabad in the High Court.

The court declared the notification of the interior ministry on December 19 null and void while also canceling the decision of the Election Commission on December 27 to postpone the elections.

Earlier, the Election Commission had asked the Islamabad High Court to review the decision of postponing the local body elections of the federal capital and to hold the elections on December 31.
