Why are e-bikes a challenge in Pakistan?

According to experts, introducing e-bikes in Pakistan is a big challenge. One of the reasons for this is that petrol bike companies have a monopoly in the country and have the power to influence government policies.

Another major challenge in this regard is the local manufacturing of these bikes as the government is not in favor of imported bikes and this adds to Pakistan's import bill. This is the reason why e-bikes policy has also exempted taxes and duties on import of spare parts.

The third major challenge is that people in Pakistan are used to riding powerful bikes and are not much aware of factors like environmental pollution and energy saving. So it will take time to convince them.

In this regard, Jolta Electric Chief Executive Officer Usman Sheikh said that there is a need to spread awareness among people about the importance and utility of e-bikes.

Building public confidence in the sustainability and viability of electric motorcycles is not an easy task. The government can also increase the sales of e-bikes in the country with the facility of free registration and exempt them from various taxes. Consumers will move towards electric vehicles and bikes only once they are offered incentives.”
